3/15/10:
On March 15, 2010 thirty student-athletes from the Central Islip High School, along with the Director of Athletics,  continued the tradition of traveling to the Morrow Elementary School to serve as literacy partners. The Student-Athlete as Reading Partners program helps promote academics and allows the student-athletes a chance to give back to this great community. In the Central Islip School District interscholastic athletics is an extension of the classroom. The biggest debate is who gets a bigger kick out of the program and who learns more, the student-athletes or the elementary students.

After reading "Casey at the Bat" by Ernest Lawrence Thayer the student-athletes fielded questions, posed for photos and signed the book as a gift for each teachers' class library. Every student-athlete, including a state champion, All-County student-athletes, those who made the playoffs and the top ranked student in the class, stressed the importance of doing well in school. The student-athletes let the Morrow students know what a special privilege and honor it was to be a varsity student-athlete, but in order to play sports at the high school they had to do excellent work in the classroom.

The student-athletes were: Steven Morales, Brittney Fenner, Derrick Franklin, Justin Harley, Karibel Perez, Tamekia Shell, George Briones, Lissa Cajuste, Dianna Mejia, Jameel Pierre, Fabian Delgado, Shannon Doyle, Clarence Morant, Whitney McNamara, Emily Recher, Denzil Charles, Ava Rubino, Rachel Silver, Brian Martens, Souvany Panoun, Jaelan Parris, Cindy Trieu, Adrienne Ming, Ryan Satchell, Tyree Webster, Tariq Boykins, Christine Horan, Paula Rubino, Byron Kesler and Andy Rodriguez.

A special thanks goes to Ms. Cummings, a 2nd grade teacher at Morrow who puts the program together and Mr. Nagy, the Morrow principal, for inviting and welcoming the student-athletes.
